Last body of miner retrieved in Siirt mine disaster

SİİRT
The body of the last miner missing after a mine collapse in the Şirvan district of Turkey’s southeastern province of Siirt on Nov. 17 was recovered early on Dec. 12, Doğan News Agency has reported.

İbrahim Kılınç, 21, was the last of the miners of 16 to be recovered after the collapse at the Madenköy copper mine.

Kılınç’s body was later transferred to Siirt State Hospital.

On Dec. 7, a local court in Siirt ordered the arrest of the mine’s permanent supervisors, S.G. and B.K., as part of the ongoing investigation into the disaster, bringing the total num-ber of arrests in the probe to seven.

However, the deputy operating manager, İ.M.M., was released on probation.

Another four suspects, including occupational safety specialists M.K. and S.K., chief engi-neer S.K. and site manager K.Y., were arrested on Dec. 6.

On Nov. 19, the court had initially arrested Mehmet Oğuz, the mine’s operating manager.

Heavy rain reportedly triggered a landslide that buried the 16 miners working at the cop-per mine.

The Madenköy mine is run by Park Elektrik, a member of the Ciner Group, which has op-erated the facility since 2006.
