Landslip causes gasoline spill in Black Sea province

Some four tons of gasoline leaked following a landslip at a gas station caused by heavy rains in the Black Sea province of Rize on Aug. 12. Police have taken security measures in the area in case of an explosion.

The incident occurred at a gas station in the Kalkandere district of Rize around 1 a.m. on Aug. 12. The management office of the gas station and a gas storage tank were affected by the slip, causing four tons of gasoline to leak into the surrounding area. No one was injured in the incident, but financial damages of 250,000 Turkish Liras were incurred.

A series of landslides and a flood in Rize last year killed 2 people and left at least six injured.

Heavy recent rainfall across Turkey has caused havoc, after a downpour hit the northwestern provinces over the weekend, causing several floods. Daily life came to a halt in parts of Istanbul, as Turkey’s Marmara region was hit by heavy rainfall yesterday. Several Istanbul districts were severely affected, and numerous houses were flooded. Heavy rain also fell in Bursa Province.

In the Black Sea province of Samsun, access to several villages was blocked due to heavy rains, and sixteen houses were evacuated due to possible flooding in Samsun’s Bafra district.
