Kardeş Türküler to be honored in Çanakkale

Kardeş Türküler, one of Turkey’s most prolific folk ensembles, has been awarded with the Homeros Sciences Cultures and Arts award as part of the International Troia Festival.

“The band features the languages and music of various civilizations, and they talk about peace at every chance. During the Trojan War, people from various Anatolian civilizations came to the region and fought for Troy. The band was nominated for the award as they always support peace,” Çanakkale Mayor Ülgür Gökhan recently said, announcing the award.

Gökhan also said the festival demonstrated Çanakkale’s determination to avoid environmental damage.
“We mention the [nearby] Kaz Mountains at every opportunity. Festivals are one of these opportunity,” he said. “Due to the fact that the Kaz Mountains are significant, we will have two panels [to discuss the situation of the mountains] during our panel sessions. While molding public opinion, the single struggle of one person is not enough. All people who are sensitive should contribute to this opinion. We are showing our stance seriously as a municipality.”

As part of the festival, exhibition openings, concerts, panels and shows will also be organized, Gökhan said. The motto of this year’s 49th event will be “Let peace be our culture,” and the festival will run from Aug. 9 to 16.
