İzmir port set to grow

İZMİR - Anatolia News Agency
The state railway authority has embarked on a huge rehabilitation project to increase the capacity and returns of the İzmir port.

The port in the western province of İzmir has not received new investments for a long time since it has been undergoing a privatization process, the written statement issued yesterday by the authority said.

Turkey’s Privatization Administration (ÖİB) is overseeing the process of restructuring the İzmir port to operate as passenger and freight ports, and also creating a cruise port for the province, the statement read.

Construction plan

The authority has planned to construct two piers, which will be able to service five big passenger ships at the same time, as part of the rehabilitation project, before the ÖİB goes out to tender for the construction of an İzmir cruise port.

The rehabilitation project also aims for large, Panamax-type cargo carriers to dock at the freight port.
