Istanbul Modern launches a new youth and children education program in collaboration with the Centre Pompidou in Paris. The program gathers performance and visual arts as a new education event.

Previous workshops included The Bird Hidden in the Stone, Beneath the Moon, The World I Touch, Playful Things, Matisse-Picasso, Wet-in-Wet Watercolor Workshop, The Magic of Light, Design Workshop, Art Circus, Art Factory, Module Home, Blobterre and Mecacollages. The program will run until Jan 19. Young Istanbul Modern provides children with the opportunity to learn about artists, understand the mysteries of artistic creation, discover the functions of objects, what they evoke, what they make one feel and acquire new experiences through interactive games.

This month the museum also hosts the Garanti Youth Workshops which provide the young audience with the opportunity to express themselves through art, to meet artists, to discover diverse techniques and to get an idea about the creative process.

Istanbul Echo workshop

In its “Istanbul Echo” workshop, young participants talk about the sounds of Istanbul, discuss the music of different cities, produce sound designs for the music of the city and at the end of each workshop prepare a musical piece. The workshop is open to all young participants interested in music, whether or not they play an instrument and whether they can sing in tune or not. In the “Graffiti Workshop” activities involve creating graffiti on the museum’s exterior space. Graffiti is now recognized as street art throughout the world. Its nature and characteristics, which differ from region to region, will be introduced in this workshop and young participants will be encouraged to develop new styles for themselves.

 The Outdoor Sculpture Workshop is carried out in two stages. The first stage is a seminar in which basic concepts related to sculptures such as space, volume, surface and mass are examined alongside contemporary examples of sculptures in public areas in Turkey. The second stage of the workshop involves experimenting with the process of creating sculptures in public areas. At this stage, participants create a collective installation from the sculptures they will make with materials offered in the workshop, using the oldest and most widely diffused techniques of cutting and carving.

This workshop includes a brief presentation on the art of animation followed by creating sequences using stop-motion techniques. The program begins with the introduction of basic animation, after which participants create characters out of materials such as cardboard, fabric and foil, write scripts, and complete their animations with storyboards and layout work. Through educational programs accompanying the collection exhibition “Past and Future,” the museum aims to help children reinforce what they learn in school and develop their creativity by learning new possibilities of expression through art. In this program, which aims to render accessible the unique possibilities offered by museums that provide the opportunity to work directly with objects, children experiment, compare, research, explore, discuss and study exhibits. Titled “My Museum Bag,” focuses on art’s relationships with other disciplines.
