Istanbul airports hosted 71 million passengers in nine months

A total of 71.1 million people used Istanbul’s Atatürk and Sabiha Gökçen airports over the course of the first nine months of 2017, with a three million increase compared to figures from last year, state-run Anadolu Agency reported on Oct. 26.

According to information compiled from the General Directorate of State Airports Authority (DHMİ) website, a total of 71.1 million people used the two biggest civil airports of the city over the past nine months of this year, increasing from 68.7 million passengers from last year over the same period between January and September.

Some 14.6 million passengers used the domestic terminal at the main Atatürk Airport, and another 33.1 million people used the international terminal of the airport between the January and September period of 2017, data showed.

Those figures showed that a total of 47.6 million passengers traveled from the Atatürk Airport, with a 1.4 million passenger increase when compared to last year’s figures of the same period.

At Sabiha Gökçen Airport on the Asian side of Istanbul, a total of 15.6 million passengers used the domestic terminal in the first nine months of the year while another 7.7 million passengers used the international terminal.

A total of 23.4 million people flew from the airport, a 937,793 passenger increase from 22.5 million compared to last year.

Separately, there were a total of 345,982 flights from Atatürk Airport this year, with 107,455 of those flights to domestic destinations and the other 238,527 flights to international destinations.

A total of 165,815 flights were conducted, of which 104,780 of them to domestic points and another 61,035 to international ones, from the Sabiha Gökçen Airport, the data revealed.

Accordingly, in the first nine months of the year there were a total of 511,797 takeoffs and landings at both airports in Istanbul, again an increase of 533,432 flights over the first nine months of 2016.
