A policeman shot dead a member of the National Intelligence Organization (MİT) yesterday afternoon in the Turkish capital Ankara, daily Hurriyet has reported.

The incident took place in front of a supermarket in Ankara's Yenimahalle district. The policeman, who was only identified as Nafi İ., shot MİT member İsmail Cesur five times before fleeing from the scene. Cesur died on the way to hospital, and his body was sent to the forensic medical department for an autopsy.

The policeman was caught in the Anatolian city of Eskişehir a couple of hours after the incident. Sources have claimed that the two had a long-running hostility. A police investigation into the incident has been opened.
