Injured New York Times reporter brought to Turkey after helicopter crash in Iraq

A New York Times reporter and a photographer have been brought to Turkey after being injured when a helicopter carrying aid to displaced members of the Yazidi community crashed in Iraq, Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu said via Twitter on Aug. 13.

Alissa Rubin, the New York Times’ Paris bureau chief and a longtime war correspondent, and Adam Ferguson, a freelance photographer working for newspaper, were wounded in the crash that occurred on Aug. 12.

“NY Times journalists Alissa Rubin and Adam Ferguson who were injured in the helicopter crash in Iraq, were brought to Turkey in coordination with Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency [AFAD],” Davutoğlu wrote, adding “I called Adam Ferguson who is under treatment in Istanbul and conveyed my message of solidarity. I also wished Alissa Rubin, who is in intensive care, a speedy recovery.”

The pilot of the helicopter died while a Yazidi member of Iraqi parliament, Vian Dakhee, was also injured in the crash.

The aircraft was dropping food and other supplies to Yazidis who have taken refuge in the remote mountains of northern Iraq, as they flee from militants belonging to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levent (ISIL).
