Turkey loses 2-1 in Iceland
REYKJAVIK
Turkey’s winning streak in its Euro 2020 qualification campaign ended on June 11 when it lost 2-1 against Iceland in Reykjavik.
Defender Ragnar Sigurdsson gave Iceland the lead in the 21st minute with a header from close range following a corner and struck again 11 minutes later, again heading home following a well-worked corner routine.
Turkey responded with a headed goal of its own from a corner by Dorukhan Toköz shortly before halftime but could not find an equalizer and saw its perfect start to qualifying halted.
The game took place amid tensions between the two nations after Turkey complained of being made to wait for three hours at passport control a day earlier at Keflavik Airport and being subjected to bag searches.
Turkey issued a diplomatic note to condemn the mistreatment of Turkish footballers at the airport.
Turkey coach Şenol Güneş did not answer questions about the team’s treatment at the airport after the game but blamed his side’s performance on fatigue.
Turkey has nine points in four matches in Group H of the Euro 2020 qualifiers, and sits in the second spot on same points with leader France and third-placed Iceland.
