Housing, food and transport total over half of household spending in Turkey

The results of a new survey by the Turkish Statistics Institute (TÜİK) have shown the majority of household spending in Turkey in 2014 went to housing and house rentals, food and transportation. 

Households spent around 24.8 percent of their average spending budget of around 2,848 Turkish Liras (around $1,000) on housing, 19.7 percent on food and non-alcoholic beverages and 17.8 percent on transportation. 

Health expenses had the smallest share at 2.1 percent, said TÜİK’s Household Budget Survey 2014. 

The survey also showed there was a significant difference in the spending tendencies of lower and higher income groups, especially on some spending items, including food and non-alcoholic beverages, transportation and housing. 

While the share of housing spending constituted 32.8 percent in the lowest income group, this rate decreased to 21.6 percent in the highest income group, according to the study. 

While the share of food and non-alcoholic beverage spending was 28.8 percent in the lowest income group, the ration decreased to 15.1 percent in the other group. 

The highest income group spent 21.9 percent of its budget on transportation costs. This decreased to 8.8 percent in the lowest income group.
