Historic cinema's fate uncertain amid demolition dispute

ISTANBUL

The future of Istanbul’s historic Rexx Cinema remains uncertain as the debate over its demolition continues.

Despite a decision by the Istanbul Conservation Board, which determined that the cinema does not qualify as a cultural asset, local authorities, preservation groups and the Kadıköy Municipality are at odds over whether the beloved venue should be preserved or torn down.

The landmark’s fate now hinges on ongoing legal and administrative processes.

Rexx Cinema, situated in Kadıköy, has long been a cornerstone of the district, hosting countless screenings and events since its establishment in the early 20th century.

Recently, the Greek Orthodox Foundation, which owns the building, conducted an assessment of the building’s structural integrity, and core samples were taken from the building. Tenants were ordered to vacate as the assessment determined that the building was unsound and required demolition.

Upon the demolition application of the Disaster Affairs Directorate of Kadıköy, the Istanbul Conservation Board sided with the demolition request.

However, the Kadıköy Municipality has challenged the decision, arguing that Rexx should be preserved as a cultural asset. The dispute has garnered support from various cultural and architectural organizations, who argue that the cinema represents a significant piece of modern architectural heritage.

As the debate continues, the ultimate decision on whether the Rexx Cinema will be demolished or preserved rests with the ongoing judicial process and the Kadıköy Municipality’s further actions.
