HDP lawmaker Osman Baydemir detained in Turkey’s west

Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) lawmaker Osman Baydemir was detained on Jan. 6, online publisher Duvar has reported.

Baydemir, who was in the western province of İzmir when he was detained, used the video conference SEGBİS system to give his testimony at the İzmir Courthouse. 

Baydemir, an MP who represents the southeastern province of Şanlıurfa for the Kurdish issue-focused party, left the courthouse following his testimony, the publisher reported.

The Şırnak Criminal Court of First Instance in Turkey’s southeast had filed an indictment against the lawmaker on charges of “violating the assembly and demonstration law numbered 2911” due to his participation in a demonstration in Şırnak’s Cizre district on Dec. 27, 2015.

The court issued a warrant for Baydemir when he refused to testify.
