Hague seeks fresh Assange talks

Britain and Ecuador should resume talks over the fate of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, who is holed up in the Ecuadorean embassy in London, as early as possible, British Foreign Secretary William Hague said Sept. 3.

“We believe that our two countries should be able to find a diplomatic solution,” Hague said in a written statement to Parliament, according to Reuters. “We have invited the government of Ecuador to resume, as early as possible, the discussions we have held on this matter to date.” Hague also said Assange could not be extradited from Sweden to a third country without Britain’s consent, which would not be given if there was a prospect of a death sentence being imposed, according to Agence France-Presse.
Assange took shelter in the Ecuadorian embassy in London to avoid extradition to Sweden.
