Guard beaten by escaping inmates dies

A guard, who was beaten by inmates when they attempted to escape from prison in southern province of Hatay’s Samandağ district, has succumbed to his injuries. 

The 60-year-old man, Fayat Toy, died after staying six days in the hospital.

The six inmates escaped from prison on Jan. 15 after seriously injuring Toy. Five of them have been captured by security forces, while the other is still on the run. 

One prison officer, who allegedly helped the inmates escape, has been arrested. 

Police are continuing to search for the fugitive. Security at the border with Syria was increased to prevent the fugitives from attempting to escape the country.
