Education Minister Ömer Dinçer said they are looking for a formula for Kurdish to be offered as an elective course in schools.

“Kurdish is not considered a ‘foreign language,’ so we are working on the legislation to see whether there is an obstacle to this or not,” Dinçer said in an interview with daily Akşam.“If there is an obstacle to Kurdish being offered as an elective course, then a formula could be found, because it is a government policy.”

Dinçer said they will be putting another elective course in schools called “Religious Studies,” which will be based on the choice of the student. “The important thing here is if the education system has gained a more democratic and flexible qualification or not. Every Christian can think about reading the Bible, Jews can think about studying Hebrew. We can also give them this opportunity,” Dinçer said
