Germany’s Westerwelle to visit Syria neighbors

German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle is set to visit Syria’s neighbors this week, in a bid to help stop the bloody strife threatening regional stability.Westerwelle was set to leave yesterday on a tour that will take in Qatar and the United Arab Emirates, as well as, Turkey and Lebanon, the Hürriyet Daily News has learnt. Westerwelle was set to hold his first official meeting with his new French counterpart Laurent Fabius in Berlin ahead of his departure yesterday.
Westerwelle will arrive in Turkey late on June 6 and will there attend the first assembly of the German Lawyers Association. He will also attend the Global Counter-Terrorism Forum in Istanbul on June 7, and meet with Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu on the sidelines of the forum. Westerwelle will then leave Turkey for Lebanon, completing his visit to Syria’s neighbors. His visit to Lebanon is expected to focus on recent violence in Syria.
Germany has ruled out deploying troops to halt the bloodshed in Syria, an idea that has been floated by French President Francois Hollande.
