German army chief visits Turkey’s Patriot Unit

German Chief of General Staff Gen. Volker Wieker paid a visit to the Patriot Unit in Turkey’s Kahramanmaraş on Oct. 17, meeting up with the German soldiers posted at the site.

Wieker entered the province the night before and traveled to the Gazi military post in morning hours. Wieker was accompanied by high-ranking Turkish army officials.

The visit was closed to the press. The German army chief also passed on good wishes to the Turkish soldiers to celebrate Eid al-Adha.

The Patriot missile batteries were deployed to deter any possible threat to Turkish territory from Syria.
Germany has Patriot missiles in Kahramanmaraş, the United States has missiles stationed in Gaziantep, while the Netherlands deployed weapons to Adana.

Several days back, Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte visited NATO’s İncirlik airbase in the southern Turkish province of Adana, where Patriot units sent by the Dutch army have been stationed since January.
