Garden space at Hadrian’s Gate to be renovated

The central district of Muratpaşa in the southern province of Antalya has planned a renovation project for a landscaped area at Hadrian’s Gate, known as the “Three Doors,” which sits between the walls surrounding the city’s historic Kaleiçi neighborhood.

The project planning by the Muratpaşa Municipality was completed for the renovation of the park next to one of Antalya’s best preserved ancient artifacts, Hadrian’s Gate, which was built for the arrival of Roman Emperor Hadrian in 130 A.D. The project will start at the end of the touristic season.

The landscape project is designed in the form of the sun and will mark a transition from the past to the present. Lighting in the form of the sun and flower beds will adorn the park.

Hadrian’s Gate is a triumphal arch built in the name of 14th Roman Emperor Hadrian (76-138 A.D.), who visited the city in the year 130. It has three arched gates.

Formerly the city walls enclosed the outside of the gate and it was not used for many years. This may be in part why the gate was discovered so well preserved after the city walls collapsed. It is considered the ancient Pamphylia region’s most beautiful gate.

The upper part has three apertures in the shape of a cupola, and except for the pillars is built entirely of white marble. The ornamentation is very striking. The original gate was two stories but little is known of the top story. On either side of the gate are towers, which were not built at the same time.
