Galatasaray on verge of Super League title
ISTANBUL
Galatasaray is on the verge of becoming the champion in Turkey’s Spor Toto Super League for the 21st time after defeating Yeni Malatyaspor 2-0 on the evening of May 12.
Two goals in the first 12 minutes of the action propelled Galatasaray’s victory over its opponent, with the home side increasing its total points tally to 72 with only a game to go.
Galatasaray’s scorers were Younes Belhanda and Bafetimbi Gomis, who were both assisted by Garry Rodrigues.
Gomis became the top scoring foreign player in the Turkish league’s history with 28 goals.
Galatasaray now only needs a draw at Göztepe next week to claim the title.
Başakşehir, which chases Galatasaray along with Fenerbahçe in the title race, won against Antalyaspor on May 11 with a 2-0 score to keep its title hopes alive.
Başakşehir must win against Konyaspor next week and hope for Galatasaray and Fenerbahçe to lose to their opponents to become champion.
The other title contender, Fenerbahçe, will take on already-relegated Karabükspor tonight.
Fenerbahçe needs to win with a big goal margin against Karabükspor to increase its chances of keeping up with Galatasaray, which has a seven-goal advantage on Fenerbahçe on goal difference.
Galatasaray’s victory over Malatyaspor means that Beşiktaş lost its chance of claiming a third league title in a row.
After May 11’s matches Gençlerbirliği became the second team to be relegated from the league with only 30 points, five worse than 15th place Akhisarspor.
