French parliamentarian suggests condoms at schools to end abortion debate

The co-chair of the EU-Turkey Joint Parliamentary Committee has suggested that Turkey begin distributing condoms in schools instead of banning abortion, daily Akşam reported today.

"Distribute condoms in schools instead of banning abortion," Helene Flautre reportedly said during arguments about abortion between deputies from the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) and the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP).

The suggestion, however, brought a furious response from the AKP. “[Helene Flautre] means high schools. I do not understand the mentality of the EU. Everyone sleeps together but they don’t get married," AKP deputy Halide İncekara said. "They defend sexual freedom. They have no measures to prevent early-age pregnancy. They just talk about protection with condoms."
