French couple detained in Istanbul over alleged ISIL links
ISTANBUL
A French couple accused of being members of the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIL) were reportedly detained in Istanbul on Dec. 19.
Anti-terror police detained the couple together with their three children at Istanbul’s Sabiha Gökçen Airport while they were attempting to leave for France, a police official stated.
The official said the police acted on intelligence from a French security unit, which said the two were suspected of planning to join ISIL in Syria from Turkish soil.
They will be deported after security procedures are completed.
More than 300 people have lost their lives in ISIL-claimed attacks in Turkey, where the jihadist group has targeted civilians in suicide bomb, rocket and gun attacks.
