French cellist to give Istanbul performance

Xavier Phillips will perform tonight at the CRR Concert Hall in Istanbul. The concert starts at 8 p.m. and tickets are available at Biletix booths.

The cellist was born in Paris where he began studying with Jacqueline Heuclin at the age of six. He was awarded first prize for chamber music at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris in Philippe Muller’s class in 1989 and undertook further study with Paul Tortelier and Mstislav Rostropovich.

After being awarded the Grand Prix du Disque for his first recording dedicated to Alberic Magnard’s chamber music, Xavier Phillips received a “Choc de la Musique” for his recordings of Schnittke, Shostakovich and Prokofiev sonatas with the Turkish Pianist Hüseyin Sermet.

Phillips has appeared with numerous orchestras, this season playing a concert with the New York Philharmonic and the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, D.C., which will both conducted by Mstislav Rostropovich. He is also scheduled to perform at the Maggio Fiorentino in Italy under the direction of Daniel Oren.
