Fourteen Turkish-origin Germans elected to Bundestag

Fourteen Turkish-origin German citizens were elected to Germany’s Bundestag in the Sept. 24 general elections.

According to the temporary initial results, Aydan Özoğuz, Metin Hakverdi, Mahmut Özdemir, Cansel Kızıltepe, Gülistan Yüksel and Elvan Korkmaz were elected on the ranks of the Social Democrats (SPD).

Cem Özdemir, Danyal Beyaz, Ekin Deligöz, Canan Bayram and Filiz Polat of the Greens made it to the parliament, while Die Linke had three Turkish-origin lawmakers: Evrim Sommer, Sevim Dağdelen and Gökay Akbulut.

With the results, the number of Turkish-origin lawmakers in Bundestag has increased to 14 from 11 in the last term. The total of Turkish-origin candidates in the election was 92.

Meanwhile, the Alliance of German Democrats (ADD), a party founded by Turkish-origin citizens that used the poster of President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in its campaign, took part in the election only in the North Rhine-Westfalia state and received 41,178 votes.
