Süleyman Demirel, a veteran politician and former President, was discharged from hospital today  following routine checks as part of the ongoing treatment of his influenza.

“I underwent treatment and I am going home. I was complaining of influenza and my treatment has been concluded,” Demirel told reporters while leaving the Güven Hospital after an intense half day treatment. He was hospitalized late Saturday on his return from a trip to Antalya. Hospital officials said routine medical examinations had been concluded.

Demirel, 88, has long suffered from influenza and has hardly been able to leave home of late. Upon leaving hospital he was only able to walk with great difficulty.

“[He] is very healthy. We will return home after the completion of routine controls and examinations. There is no problem [with regard to his health],” Demirel’s doctor, Aylin Cesur, informed the media late Saturday.
