Flying Broom Festival presents awards

The 18th Flying Broom Women’s Films Festival ended on May 18 with Israeli film “Gett: The Trial of Viviane Amsalem” winning the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI) award, while actress Begüm Akkaya was presented with the festival’s Young Witch Award this year. 

The Flying Broom, the only festival to which FIPRESCI sends a jury, ended with a ceremony held at Ankara’s Büyülü Fener Movie Theater. 

“In the 18th year of the festival, we say ‘no’ to censorship, which is the main mission to organize the festival, and believe that all films in the festival program should be seen by women without being censored,” said actress Damla Sönmez, the head of the festival committee. 

Deputy Israeli Ambassador to Ankara Amira Oron received the FIPRESCI award on behalf of the team of the film “Gett: The Trial of Viviane Amsalem.”

Actress Akkaya, who won the Young Witch Award for her “Bahar” character in the film “Nergis Hanım,” directed by Görkem Şarkan, was also present at the ceremony to accept her award. She said she accepted the award on behalf of laborer women. 

With the theme “the states of 18,” this year the 10-day festival screened a total of 133 films from 38 countries under 17 headlines.
