Fatal traffic accidents in Turkey decreased by half in July due to monitoring system

Fatal traffic accidents in Turkey decreased by 53.3 percent from July 1-19 compared to the same period last year, thanks to a newly-introduced monitoring and imaging system for traffic, Turkish national police announced on July 20.

In order to monitor traffic law and prevent people from over speeding on the roads, the Electronic Traffic Control System has been developed and put into execution on July 1, said the statement from the national police.

“With this system, prevention of drivers going above the speed limit, reduction of fatal accidents due to excessive speed, minimization of emission damage to nature and relieving the burden of high fuel consumption, due to excessive speed, have been targeted” the statement said. 

Accordingly, the number of deaths from traffic accidents decreased by 63.6 during the period from July 1-19 this year, compared with the same period last year. The number of traffic accidents involving injuries decreased by 28.3 percent, along with a reduction of 46.2 percent in the number of injuries and total traffic accidents decreased by 29.7 percent, the statement revealed.

“In the 18,479 traffic accidents involving death or injury that happened in our country in the last five years, 1,082 of our citizens have lost their lives, 36,507 of our citizens have been injured. In just 2016, 246 of our citizens have lost their lives,” the statement noted.
