A family of five was found dead in their home from suspected carbon monoxide poisoning in Ankara’s Keçiören district yesterday. The bodies were found when neighbors noticed the absence of Ahmet Aydın, who worked as the superintendent of their building.Police units and paramedics reportedly arrived at the scene and discovered the bodies of the entire family after being notified by neighbors.
They discovered the bodies of Aydın, 29, his wife Betül Aydın, 26, their daughters Ece Sıla, 5, and infant Hira Gül. Mehmet Gürgeç, 44, the brother of Betül Aydın who was visiting the family, was also found dead in the house according to reports.
Authorities indicated the family may have died due to carbon monoxide gas leaking in to the house through the heater.
Despite the building and the flat having a working natural gas system, the family used a coal burning stove, which is comparatively cheaper. Coal is delivered free to low-income families by the Ankara Metropolitan Municipality.
The Aydın family used coal as they were suffering financial difficulties, according to neighbors.
The prosecutor’s office has launched an investigation into the incident, according to the reports.
