Exam cheaters may face four years in jail: Bill

The Turkish Parliament’s Planning and Budget Commission passed an omnibus bill late June 27 including many regulations on public topics focusing on education, labor, economy, business and more after 19 hours of work.

One of the top topics of the bid was education, as a new regulation on the penalty for cheating on exams conducted by the Student Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM) was accepted. People who cheat on exams individually or as a group would be sentenced one to four year in prison, according to the bill. Apart from penalties, applications to gain information about questions and answers on ÖSYM exams within the right of information act will not reportedly be accepted. The penalties for illegal gambling and games of chance have been also increased. A prison sentence three to five years and punitive fine for 10,000 days would be imposed for those who arrange and allow sports gambling games. New penalties for people who play the games, assist money transfers, encourage illegal games have been also approved.
