The chapter on taxation would be eleventh of a total of 33 chapters or policy areas in which a candidate country must conform to EU standards in order to become a full member.

Turkey has so far opened chapters on free movement of capital, company law, intellectual property law, information society and media, enterprise and industry policy, trans-European networks, consumer and health protection, statistics, financial control, and science and research. The Swedish term presidency, which is scheduled to start on July 1, is expected to speed up Turkey's accession talks by opening three more chapters.
