ANKARA

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan spoke by phone with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump on Wednesday, offering his congratulations on the latter's reelection victory.

During the call, Erdoğan expressed hope for stronger cooperation between Türkiye and the United States in the coming term.

Trump surpassed the 270 Electoral College votes needed to secure a second term, currently standing at 292 compared to 224 for Democratic candidate and Vice President Kamala Harris, according to the Associated Press.

"We overcame obstacles that nobody ever thought we could," Trump told supporters in his victory speech delivered early Wednesday morning in Florida.

"This will truly be the golden age of America."

Trump will be inaugurated for his second term on Jan. 20, 2025, with Harris set to oversee the swearing-in ceremony at the U.S. Capitol.

Earlier, Erdoğan congratulated Trump in a social media post.

"I congratulate my friend Donald Trump, who won the presidential election in the U.S. after a great struggle and was reelected," Erdoğan said in a post on X Wednesday.

In his message, Erdoğan expressed hope that Turkish-U.S. relations would grow stronger under a renewed Trump administration. He also said he hopes regional and global conflicts, including the war in Ukraine and the situation in Palestine, would come to an end.

"I believe that more efforts will be made for a fairer world. I hope the elections will be auspicious for the friendly and allied people of the U.S. and all humanity," Erdoğan said.
