Andrea Di Corrado took home his first ever professional victory yesterday in the fifth stage of the Presidential Tour of Cycling, also known as Tour of Turkey. The 23-year-old Italian rider from Lombardy of the team Colnago-CSF Inox finished the 178-kilometer stage between Marmaris and Turgutreis in four hours, 50 minutes and 26 seconds, ahead of Saxobank rider Jonas Aaen Jorgensen, who finished in 4:51.06.
Bulgarian rider Ivailo Gabrovski of the Turkish Konya Torku Şekerspor team maintained his general classification leader standing with a time of 18:47.30 and will start today’s sixth stage in the Turquoise Jersey.
Astana’s Alexsandr Dyachenko follows Gabrovski with a 1.33 minute distance and Caja Rural rider Danail Andonov Petrov is third.
Yesterday, Di Corrado took the lead after attacking the rest of a six-man breakaway group in the final 10 kilometers of the stage. The 23-year-old put in a powerful jump, just after an earlier attack had been pulled back and managed to build up an unassailable lead in the rolling final kilometers.
Jonas Aaen Jorgensen (Saxo Bank) won the sprint for second place, coming just ahead of Jérôme Cousin (Europcar) and some 40 seconds behind Corrado. The rest of the breakaway followed close behind him.
The Tour will continue with the 179-kilometer Bodrum-Kuşadası stage today. The Tour will wrap up on Sunday with the final stage in Istanbul.
