Main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) deputy parliamentary group chair Muharrem İnce appealed to the Parliament speaker’s office on Friday to lift his parliamentary immunity, in order to be acquitted of the sexual harassment charges that were recently leveled by Deputy Prime Minister Bülent Arınç.

In his appeal, İnce said two official notices had been sent to Parliament for the lifting of his parliamentary immunity.

“I want to be acquitted and get rid of the smear campaign against me by the removal of my parliamentary immunity,” İnce said, asking for the commission in charge of taking official notices on the agenda of Parliament’s General Assembly to gather in the shortest amount of time.

The issue was raised by Arınç on Nov. 21 during debates over a censure motion against Arınç, which was introduced by the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP).

Arınç had said that there was an official notice on İnce concerning charges of sexual harassment and called on him to resign.
