Deputies shouldn't conduct hunger strike: President

ISTANBUL

Turkish President Abdullah Gül has expressed his disagreement with a decision by Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) deputies to conduct a hunger strike in solidarity with protesting inmates, calling on them to end the action, daily Radikal has reported.

"I don't approve of deputies and mayors choosing such a way. These are people who should strive to find a solution concerning the matter. I hope they will all end this as soon as possible,” Gül said earlier today at a joint press conference alongside Sassou Nguesso, president of the Congolese Republic.

Gül also commented on the Israeli attack on Gaza, saying: "We are closely following [the incident] and harshly condemn Israel's attacks. The world's common expectation from the U.S. is for them to alert Israel.”

Gül received Nguesso, who is conducting an official visit to Turkey, at Çankaya Palace before the press conference.
