Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu faced an unusual protest in Bursa while posing for journalists slicing kebap for the town’s famous İskender dish on March 2

Davutoğlu, who hosted U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry yesterday in Ankara, relaxed during his visit to Bursa by stopping at an İskender kebap restaurant during lunch. Davutoğlu was laughing and joking with the chefs when a labor union official shouted from the street: “I have passed here for 15 years. I have not once been able to eat [an İskender kebap]. Our esteemed minister shall enjoy his lunch. But let the public servants eat too.”

The solo protest of Orhan Avcı, Bursa representative for the publishing syndicate Haber-Sen, was then restrained by security guards. He later told officers that he only wanted to convey the message that the salaries of civil servants were not enough to live on.

Davutoğlu, who was not aware of the protest, ate his lunch at the restaurant along with his wife, Şara Davutoğlu, Bursa Governor Şehabettin Harput and Harput’s wife.
