Ruling Justice and Development Party Deputy Chair Öznur Çalık has slammed those who criticized Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu’s behavior toward children during a welcome ceremony for Turkish hostages at Ankara’s airport in September.

“First they have to be human in order to understand our prime minister’s love for children … for humanity,” Anadolu Agency quoted Çalık as saying on Oct. 6.

“Those who criticized our prime minister’s affinity for that child should feel sorrow … so that they can feel [Davutoğlu’s] joy,” she added, referring to an incident in which Davutoğlu was seen lifting up a child, one of 49 hostages freed from jihadist captivity, by the head at the airport.

“This was [an expression of] real and good love,” Çalık said.
