Court decides on behalf of Turkey in energy case against Greece

A Paris-based arbitration court has decided on the behalf of Turkey’s gas grid Botaş in a case against Greece’s state-run energy company DEPA, said Turkish Energy Minister Taner Yıldız. 

“We opened an arbitration case, which was between Botaş and DEPA, in Paris four years ago. The court has made its decision on the behalf of Turkey,” Yıldız said. 

Botaş and DEPA representatives will discuss the issue rising from Turkey’s gas exports to Greece, he said. 

“The compensation value is expected to be announced soon. I believe this amount will be around $100 million,” he said. 

The case dates back to a $300 million debt owed by DEPA to Botaş from a deal inked in 2007 and starting in 2008 involving the sale of gas it brought from Azerbaijan to Greece, for which Turkey took Greece to the court of arbitration.

“Of course, we have wanted to [help] Greece right now, but we also give great importance to our national interests. After the calculations are made, we’ll present the situation to our prime minister and president. We’ll be following the developments,” he said.
