The conversion of Istanbul’s Kuleli military high school into a hotel is not on the government’s agenda, Defense Minister Fikri Işık has said.“For God’s sake, who thought about converting the Kuleli military high school building into a hotel? There is no such thing on our government’s agenda right now. Perhaps it could be used for different purposes. We know that there are memories of a great number of our people and they are venues where a number of important people grew up, such as the Kuleli, Işıklar and Naval high schools,” Işık said in an interview with Hürriyet.
Debates about the fate of the high school began after the failed coup attempt on Aug. 2 amid accusations that some of the plotters might have come from the educational institution.
The government shut down all military high school departments and colleges in response to the coup attempt in accordance with a decree law enacted after a state of emergency was declared, although war schools were spared.
Some have suggested that Kuleli be used as a hotel or a museum.
