Contractors make $11.6 billion in 1st half

Turkey’s contracting sector is galloping at full speed toward its goals by growing 70 percent in the first half of 2013 compared to the same period last year, Turkish Economy Minister Zafer Çağlayan said today.

“The cost of the 114 projects undertaken by our contracting sector abroad has reached $11.6 billion, from $6.9 billion worth of 96 projects during the first half of 2012. I believe Turkish contractors will continue their high performance in the second half of 2013,” Çağlayan said.

The total cost of the 7,141 projects that have been undertaken by Turkish companies has reached $250.9 billion, according to the latest data from the Economy Ministry.

Stressing that Turkmenistan was the favorite country for the Turkish contracting sector, Çağlayan said the total cost of the 28 projects undertaken by Turkish companies in the Caspian country had reached $4.8 billion.

“Turkmenistan is the top country among the countries where Turkey took on the most projects in 2013. The largest project undertaken abroad by a Turkish company alone in 2013 was the Ashgabat Airport,” he said.

Turkish contractors have undertaken projects in 101 countries until now. Currently, Turkey ranks second after China in the world for undertaking contracting projects, according to Engineering News Record (ENR) magazine.
