The construction of high-security border posts along Turkey’s border with Iraq has accelerated despite the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party’s (PKK) declaration of a cease-fire as part of the ongoing process to find a peaceful solution to the Kurdish issue.

A total of 149 out of 402 planned posts have been completed on the top of the mountains, with some stations as high as 2,000 meters along the Turkish border with Iraq.

Replacing less-secure posts

The new stations are being built by the Housing Development Administration of Turkey (TOKİ) to replace smaller and less-secure posts along the borders in the provinces of Hakkari and Şırnak. The new stations are slated to be completed by fall. The PKK declared a cease-fire on March 21 as part of the peace process.
