Conference to end domestic violence

The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) and daily Hürriyet’s campaign to end domestic violence joined forces to host the “End Domestic Violence!” conference today, the U.N. International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

At the conference will be a book launch for “Half the Sky,” a book by The New York Times writers Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn. The book, translated by Doğan Publishing, tells the stories of women from all over the world who were subject to domestic violence. It details personal trials of women from countries including China, Rwanda, Bangladesh, Nigeria, Pakistan and Somalia.

Victims of domestic violence from India, Turkey and Bosnia will attend the conference to tell their personal stories of surviving domestic violence.

Vuslat Doğan Sabancı, daily Hürriyet’s head of the executive board, attended a conference on domestic violence yesterday organized by the Women Entrepreneurs Association (KAGİDER). Sabancı said the number of women subjected to domestic violence in Turkey has unfortunately risen since Hürriyet launched the campaign against domestic violence.

Along with Sabancı, Family and Social Policies Minister Fatma Şahin and EU Minister Egemen Bağış will attend today’s conference.
