President Abdullah Gül has described the visit of Republican People’s Party (CHP) leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu on March 7 as “fruitful” for the issues on Turkey’s agenda.

“Kılıçdaroğlu told me his thoughts and his party’s perspective regarding the important days we are currently in. I also conveyed my thoughts about those issues,” Gül said on March 8. Kılıçdaroğlu met with President Abdullah Gül to discuss recent “important issues” on Turkey’s agenda, according to sources.

The meeting comes amid heated debates over the government-initiated “peace process” on the Kurdish issue and disagreements on the drafting of Turkey’s new charter. Ahead of the meeting, which had been requested by the CHP, Kılıçdaroğlu issued a written statement expressing his party’s willingness to resolve the Kurdish issue, adding that the Turkish people have started to accept the CHP’s “road map” on the Kurdish issue.

After the 45-minute meeting, the CHP leader declined to comment on its content, simply saying that everyone should “act carefully during such a crucial period,” referring to the Kurdish issue talks.
