CHP suggests international conference on Syria

Main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu has called on the government to hold an international conference with representatives of both the Syrian opposition and the al-Assad administration in attendance, to find a solution to the ongoing Syrian conflict.

Kılıçdaroğlu has said that Turkey should not allow Syria to disintegrate, and should make efforts to put a stop to the bloodshed in its southern neighbor.

Revealing his party’s eight-point plan for solving the Syria conflict, Kılıçdaroğlu suggested that the Turkish Parliament should call for an international conference to be led by the secretary-general of the United Nations (UN), with the attendance of the members of the UN Security Council, the Arab League, the European Union, Iran, and the Arab neighbors of Syria and Turkey, as well as representatives of the Syrian opposition and the Syrian government.

“After expressing their views on the issue at the opening of the conference, the Syrian administration and opposition should negotiate under the supervision of the secretary-general of the UN. In the final portion of the conference, a document of agreement prepared by the secretary-general of the UN, reflecting an agreement between the Syrian opposition and administration could be submitted to the UN Security Council,” Kılıçdaroğlu said, adding that the negotiation should include a cease fire, a new constitution, and election laws, and should guarantee rights and freedoms to all ethnic, sectarian and religious communities.
