CHP leader calls gov’t to withdraw charter draft

Main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu has called on the prime minister and parliamentary speaker to end the constitution talks and drop the draft, arguing that signing off on the draft without seeing its full content was a “disgrace.”

Speaking during a visit to Bodrum in western Turkey, the CHP chair said Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım and Parliamentary Speaker İsmail Kahraman “should end the constitution talks and withdraw the constitutional offer” to save the country from “disgrace.”

“They should save the parliament from a disgrace that is signing a blank page without even seeing the constitution draft. When they do this we will respect them,” said Kılıçdaroğlu. 

He added that “Turkey will become a magnificent country” when a thought that allows democracy and the republic to reign prevails, “not the one that ends democracy and the parliament.”
