CHP demands parliamentary inquiry into claims of MİT involvement in protests

A group of main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) deputies have submitted a proposal to parliament demanding the opening of a commission to investigate the alleged role of the National Intelligence Organization (MİT) in social unrest.

CHP Deputy Head Sezgin Tanrıkulu and CHP deputies Veli Ağbaba and Özgür Özel signed the research proposal that has been submitted to parliament.

The deputies recalled the death of Serap Eser, the 18-year-old victim of a fire bomb attack on an Istanbul city bus six years ago, and said any MİT involvement in the incident should be investigated, based on a recent interview with the former interior minister.

Former Interior Minister İdris Naim Şahin said in a recent interview with daily Bugün that the incident, which took place before he became a ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) minister, was the work of the MİT.

“I have unfortunately learned that the people who sabotaged the bus, throwing Molotov cocktails, were members of the MİT,” Şahin said.

In their application for a commission, the CHP deputies also referred to claims that the MİT could have played a role in incidents during the Gezi protests in 2013, as well as the Oct. 6-7, 2014 protests in southeastern Turkey.
