Cavendish wins action-packed fourth stage of Tour of Turkey

British rider Mark Cavendish won the lively fourth stage of the Presidential Cycling Tour of Turkey April 30, which was interrupted by a rain triggered accident.

The Omega Pharma-Quick Step rider came out on top of the grueling 132-kilometer stage between Fethiye and Marmaris.  

Maximiliano Richeze of the Lampre-Merida team and Cavendish’s teammate, Mark Renshaw, finished second and third respectively.

Some 35 riders fell in the early stages of the race, with 19 of them being treated for minor injuries. Some teams therefore demanded that the race be canceled due to the poor conditions, but after the race was restarted the British sprint king cruised to his third stage victory this week.

Estonian Rein Taaramae is still the holder of the Turquoise Jersey as the overall race leader with a time of 16 hours, 54 seconds. Taaramae is followed by Britain’s Adam Yates, who is six seconds behind, and France’s Romain Hardy, who is 38 seconds behind.

The tour will continue with today’s 183-kilometer fourth stage between Marmaris and Turgutreis.
