Fried or mashed, potatoes are by far America's favorite vegetable, followed by corn and broccoli, the Idaho Potato Commission announced Thursday.

In the survey published in Idaho, the top potato-growing state in the union, pollsters found that of 1,000 adults 18 years and older, 26 percent put potatoes at the top of their favorite veggie list, with corn on the cob trailing a distant second (19 percent) and broccoli third (17 percent).

As to how Americans prefer to eat the humble spud, 28 percent said mashed, 25 percent baked, 20 percent as chips or French fries (U.S.), 10 percent mixed with meat (such as shepherd's pie), and five percent as crisps or chips (U.S.).

The U.S. Department of Agriculture recommends a daily diet of approximately five servings of vegetables per day.

A recent survey courtesy of the Idaho Potato Commission determined that 98 percent of Americans meet the USDA requirement by eating potatoes.
