Breast cancer patients survivors often lose jobs, study shows

Many women who contract breast cancer soon find themselves unemployed even if they beat the disease, according to a new study by the University of Michigan, the Time reported.

Some 30 percent of women lose their jobs four years after getting the disease, according to the study, whose findings were recently published in the journal Career.

Chemotherapy procedures have long-term effects on patients and may also affect women’s job performance after beating breast cancer, ultimately forcing them to miss work.

At the end of treatment process, most unemployed women still wanted to return their own job or were seeking a new job, the study said.

Researcher Dr. Reshma Jagi said many patients would heal in the long term even if they may lose their jobs.
