Boy killed in 70-meter deep well

Officials recovered the dead body of a 6-year-old from the bottom of a 70-meter-deep well yesterday after struggling for hours to pull him back up in the southeastern province of Gaziantep.

Hasan Kaya fell into the well the night of April 17 while playing with his friends in the yard of an apartment on Payam Street in the neighborhood of Atatürk. The opening of the well had been covered with a piece of cardboard.

Officials were able to pull Kaya’s body back up to the surface with the help of machinery provided by the Kahramanmaraş Regional Directorate of the State Waterworks Authority (DSİ.)

Kaya’s body was taken to Nizip State Hospital where his family and friends were also brought when they suffered a nervous breakdown after hearing the news of his death, according to reports.

The Nizip District Governor’s Office also indicated that the well, whose diameter measured 28 centimeters, had been illegally dug up. Judicial and administrative investigations were consequently launched against the individuals responsible for opening the well.
