Bomb blast kills one child, wounds three children in Turkey’s southeast

One child has been killed and three children have been wounded after a bomb exploded in their hands in the southeastern province of Diyarbakır. 

The blast occurred in the Tekel neighborhood of Diyarbakır’s Silvan district at around 12 p.m. on Oct. 8.

According to reports, children playing outside picked up an object that was left following recent battles without recognizing it is an explosive.

Four children from the same family, aged between 5 and 10 years old, were wounded and transferred to Silvan State Hospital. 

Nine-year-old Hasan Yılmaz succumbed to his wounds in hospital while his brother and two cousins were transferred to better-equipped hospitals in Diyarbakır.

Police have launched an investigation into the incident.

Silvan has been the site of continuing unrest, with authorities recently imposing a curfew on the area in an effort to fill in trenches dug by locals to protect themselves against abuses by state forces. The government, however, claims the curfews are necessary to halt activities by the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).
