Gas flow on a pipeline carrying Iranian natural gas to Turkey was halted due to an explosion in eastern Turkey early yesterday morning, Turkish energy officials said.

The blast occurred in the Ağrı’s Doğubayazıt district, the officials said on condition of anonymity.

It was not immediately clear what caused the blast or when the gas flow will resume, they said.

Doğan news agency, however, said the pipeline was sabotaged by members of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).

The blast created a 50-meter wide, three-meter deep hole in the ground.

Turkey buys natural gas from Iran, Russia and Azerbaijan and liquefied natural gas from Nigeria and Algeria.
